COMMANDER'S CORNER

Dear Membership,

As you know, we are coming up to the end of another year and this will be the last newsletter for the year 2014.

This past year we have made many changes to our club, not just in the restorations to our building, but in the ways we run and function as an American Legion.  Most legions as they move forward in years, their membership decreases because of death or other reasons but Post 382 has increased every year since 2006 and, thanks to all of you, we have made 100 percent paid up dues since then.

As we stand now, we are doing well – each year we are getting better and more peopleare getting involved and supporting our place.

Over the past few years, we have been complimented many times on how great our Postis and how involved we are in the community.  Let's keep this reputation alive.  Keep upthe support!  The more support we get the more support we can give, not only to the veterans returning but to the community programs.

Thanks and Semper Fi,

Commander Jim Doherty

Dues

All dues are now due!  Please pay your dues and keep supporting “The Best Post on the East Coast!”  FYI to American Legion members (A.L.), the National is behind in updating its information passed on  by individual posts. If you receive a pink notice and you already paid, please disregard.  If you are not sure, you can call the Post at 617-328-9824 and ask for the commander. We've been mailing a lot of checks back to the members.  Remember the National sends out notices in July and that is when most of you paid.  Thanks again for all your support!

Friends' bills will be mailed out by December 15th.  Door locks will be changed on March 1, 2015.  The new card keys are white in color.

WELCOME ABOARD!

            Christopher Doherty,  A.L. (Navy)

            Tim Boyle, F.O.L.

            Danny Church,  A.L.

            John Boyle, F.O.L.

            Jen Bergin, F.O.L.

            Scott Salman, A.L.

            Dawn MacLeod, F.O.L.

            David Gunther, A.L.

            Kyle Costa, F.O.L.

            Barry Ambroseno, A.L.

            Mary Coughlin, F.O.L.

Post 382 Softball Game

Thanks to all who participated in this year's softball game.  It was a great day of fun had by all.  The “Young Guys” still looking in shape and cocky as hell, the “Old Guys” drinking beer, having fun and still turning double plays.

We had a great turnout thanks to all of you and thanks to Bill Harris, the uniform shirts were great.  Even the cheering section had great shirts!

Anyways, the “Young Guys” earned the bragging rights for another year. They came through with their bats and ended up winning by a run.  But wait until next year, you are going down!  We are calling in the old recruits.

Clambake

The 2014 clambake was a great success thanks to all who helped out and made it such a great day.  To this day a lot of residents of Squantum still don't even know how good our clambake is!  Where else can you get such a good meal for such a cheap price.  Everyone praised us about how good the food was.  Special thanks to the cooks and hostesses who all worked their butts off.  Michael Hutchings, Mark Hastings, Jeff Vrandenburg, Gail Burns, Joannie Hastings, Lori Dow,  Cathy Spring, Fran Waldron, Ann Burns, Cathy Paolucci, Cindy Flynn, Ronnie Burns, Michael Kowilcik, Tommy Cunniff and Commander Jim Doherty – great job!!!  Another successful and enjoyable clambake.

Bar - Upkeep

For those who haven't been able to visit our Post, we have put a lot of time and money back into the Post to make it more presentable and enjoyable. Last week we replaced all the rugs in the function room and the bar, so the place is looking real good, especially for those who are looking to rent the hall.

Though we are almost there, we still have some fund-raising to do.  Our goal is to get enough money and support so we can replace the heating system, the roof and install central air conditioning in the near future.

A Special Thank You

Thanks to member, Tom Lynch and his wife Maureen.  They donated a new flat screen TV and stand for another Keno screen over the bar - we needed it.

Zero Tolerance

Again, FYI!  We do not accept any disrespectful behavior, treat people the way you want to be treated yourself.  Have respect for those members who bring in their wives or friends for a drink.  They didn't come in to hear you yell at a TV during a Patriots' game.  F-bombs are not tolerated!  Remember, no matter how much you yell or how loud you are, the referee cannot hear you and he wouldn't change his call even if he did.  Please be considerate!

Football Food

We have a budget for food during the games and during our parties.  We put food out for the members who take time to come by and support the club. We do not have a take out food service!  This food bought by the Post stays in the Post!

The same goes for the function room.  If you didn't get an invitation to the function means you weren't invited.  Stay out!

Color Guard

We are hoping to get more young guys involved in our Post color guard.  As it stands now, sometimes we barely have enough guys for a color guard. Having a color guard is part of civic duty.  We are obligated to march in three parades a year – Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Squantum Fourth of July. Anyone interested in marching, please call and let us know.  It's 3 1/2 hours a year out of your time.  It is also no cost to the individual.  The Post will buy your shirts, hats, jackets, etc.  Our goal is to have an all Iraq and Afghanistan War color guard.  I promise you, you will be the best dressed guards ever.

Our color guard now has been marching for years, some have been doing it over 30 years.  Let's give them a break and get them some help.

Hall Rentals

Remember, we do have a great hall that we rent out to our members and their friends.  It is a great room  for birthday parties, communions, christenings, etc. and the price is the best in Quincy.  2015 is starting to fill up fast, so if you have something you are thinking of renting the hall for, please call soon. First come, first serve basis.  The price of the hall is $250.00 plus $50.00 for the bartender, if needed.

Please call the Post and ask for Kim Shepherd or Jim Doherty.  A $100.00 deposit and a signed contract will reserve the hall for you.

Congratulations

To our future members -

Liam Galvin, son of Johnny Galvin and Sara Kane – born July, 2014

Hunter Kowilcik, son of Michael Kowilcik, Jr. and Jenelle O'Neil –            born July, 2014

Charlotte Struzik, daughter of Matthew Struzik and Tiffany Flaherty –            born August, 2014

Condolences

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Audrey Lacey, who passed away last week.  Audrey was the sister of member, Colleen Collins.

COMMANDER'S CORNER

Dear Membership,

Once again, I have the honor to say thanks for this opportunity to be your Commander for the upcoming year. As you know, I cannot stress enough on how great and how lucky we are to have such a wonderful Legion family. This is not because of one man's doing, it is because of all of us. Everybody in our Post contributes in some way, even if it's just paying dues. Everything is appreciated. The veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan need us in a bad way and it's up to us to keep supporting our veterans' organizations.

Thanks and Semper Fi,
Commander Jim Doherty

COMMANDER'S CORNER

Dear Membership,

It has been three months since our last newsletter. Hope all is well.

As a post, we survived another long winter. Financially, our last few weeks have been great. This will help us a lot in paying for all the oil bills we've had this past winter.

As I said in the last newsletter, our goal is to make some upgrades to the members lounge. I did put a hold on the start of this, due to the fact we had some big functions booked, so we decided to wait.

Speaking of functions, we just held fundraisers for Michael Kowilcik and Michael Struzik and the turnout for both events was incredible!

It makes me proud to be the Commander of such a loyal and generous Legion family. Our family is strong and our community is even stronger. We are lucky to live in such a great place! We are the “Best Post on the East Coast!”

Semper Fi,

Commander Jim Doherty

DUES
All unpaid dues are now past due! If you did not receive a (gray) door card key, chances are your dues have not been paid.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations go out to the new Mr. & Mrs. Michael Kowilcik and Fran Pearson Kowilcik, were wed here at the Post on April 6, 2013. Great job and best of luck to both of you!

CONDOLENCES
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Robert (Red) Flannery and Edward (Buddy) McManus. Both passed away recently. Edward McManus is the father of both Eddy and Wally McManus, who both have been longtime members of our Post. Red Flannery has been a long-time resident of Squantum and both will be sorely missed.

REMINDER
Our Post is one of the most active and one of the nicest posts around, so please let's keep it that way! Respect all other members and treat them the way you would want to be treated. Inappropriate language is not acceptable.

FUNCTION HALL
As most of you know, we rent our function hall out to make ends meet. Not all functions in the back room are post-run functions, meaning they are private parties. So, if you didn't receive an invitation, you are not welcome! Please give the renter the privacy they paid for and stay out of the back room.

HALL RENTALS
All rentals will have to be approved by the Board and are on a first-come, first-serve basis! With all the new renovations and the addition of the new deck off the function hall, the price of the rental went from $250 to $300. This price includes a bartender for four hours.

NOMINATIONS
Any member, who is interested in running for officer positions or for the E Board, has to get his/her name to the Board by May 6, 2013. The May members' meeting is the night of the election.
P.S. You have to be a regular member to qualify.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRATION
Again, thank you to the Sons and Friends who put on a great feast. Thanks to all who helped make this day a great success! A special thank you to our cooks - Michael Norris, Mark Hastings, Michael Hutchings, and to our DJ - Bill Harris.

COMMANDER'S CORNER

Dear Membership,

Since this is the first newsletter of 2014, I want to wish you all a Happy New Year.

Hopefully, this year will be better than last.

As for the Post, I just want to thank everyone for all their support in 2013.  Last year we wouldn't have survived the year without you.  Thanks to all of you, we were able to pay our bills and continue our ways of being an active post.  So, again, thanks for your continued support and let's keep our title as the “Best Post on the East Coast.”

Semper Fi,

Commander Jim Doherty

DUES

All dues for 2014 are now past due.  Door locks will change on March 1, 2014.  The new card keys will be mailed out within the next two weeks.  The new cards are gold in color.

THANK YOU

Special thanks to members, Martin Lynch and Kevin McBride, for taking care of the Christmas lights.  The Post looked great!  Thanks to both of you. Thanks to our State Representative, Bruce Ayers, for his generous donation to the Super Bowl raffle with proceeds going to our Scholarship Fund and Troop Fund.

Thanks to all members who are helping or helped with the renovations in the Members Lounge.  Special thanks to Michael Hutchings, Mark Hastings, Michael Kowilcik, Sr. Mike Kowilcik, Jr. and Joe Cote, who did all the prep work and the painting.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to both members, Jonathan O'Driscoll and Steven Spring, for their completion of Quincy Fire Academy.  They are both part of Quincy's finest.

LOOK WHO'S 50!

Happy Birthday to members, Don Ross, Jr. and Michael Hutchings, who both turned 50 this past week.  Surprisingly, they only look 60...

SLEDDING ON THE HILL

In the past, the Post would accommodate the sledders and parents while the children were enjoying themselves.  But, as it stands now, as an American Legion post, we cannot take the responsibility of having children in the bar.  The lounge is for members 21 and older.  Bartenders cannot be responsible for watching the children and sometimes the parents while working.  With this being said, if it is possible, we would be happy to open the function room area so the children can warm up and maybe have a hot chocolate - as long as they are accompanied by an ADULT.

Thanks,   Bar Manager

POST T-SHIRTS

T-shirts are on sale behind the bar.  Long sleeve t-shirts – brown with gold lettering are on sale for $15 per shirt.

Please remember to let someone from the Post know if you have a friend or a member that is sick and could use a card or something from the Post.   We would like them to know we are thinking of them.

REMINDER

We are an American Legion post.  We are there for the veterans and their families first!  Just happens, we have a great bar located in a small community, which means we are considered guests, so act accordingly.

The talking of politics and money are prohibited.  Inappropriate language is not acceptable by anyone – veteran or not!  It is an embarrassment to our establishment and will not be tolerated.  You will not be served.

HALL RENTALS

FYI – Just to let you know, hall rentals are done on a first-come, first-serve basis.  2014 is starting to fill up fast, so if you are planning a Christening or a First Communion, you should book soon.  The cost is $250.00 for the hall or $350.00 with a bartender.

COMMANDER'S CORNER

Dear Membership,

I hope all of you had a great summer and that all is well with you. It has been three months since our last newsletter.

Since then, we have had many changes to our Post. We are in the process of painting our members' lounge and we have also completed the landscaping in the front of the building. The Post, I think, is looking better than ever. It's been a slow process, but it's getting there!

This summer we had many Post functions at which we had a great showing of support.
I want to thank all who helped out and supported us throughout the season. Your participation in these events helps pay the bills.

Thank you for your continued support,
Commander Jim Doherty

THANK YOU
Special thanks to member of the month, Al Endruinas, who donated all the parking lot curbs along the front of the building to protect our new landscaping. He not only donated the curbs, but he also had them installed.

UPDATE - ANNUAL SOFTBALL GAME
First, thanks to Bill Harris for the donation of team shirts – the shirts are awesome!

This year's game of the Old Guys v. Young Guys Softball Game had a wonderful turnout. The park was packed and a great time was had by all.

This year the Young Guys came to play ball! Not only did they have practices, but they had their roster set. Young Guys started out strong in the first inning, taking a five-run lead, but after the Old Guys got primed up, they bounced back within a run. It turned out to be a close game with great pitching by Bill Harris (starter), Michael Kowilcik, Sr. (reliever) and Kevin Layden (closer.) The Old Guys held their own.

The most awesome thing about the game was that we had a Vietnam veteran pitching to an Afghanistan veteran. It was something to see!

Oh, and because I'm the lucky one writing this newsletter, of course the Old Guys won the game – as usual!

SICK CALL
I'm glad to report that as of now there is no one to report as sick. Please let the Post know if we are overlooking a member or friend who is ill so we can send a card or note to show our support.

COMMANDER'S CORNER

Dear Membership,

It has been almost four months since our last newsletter was sent out and I hope all is well with everyone.

I can now say that, because it is August and the summer is close to an end, we have made it through another summer season ahead of the game. The summer months are, unfortunately, our slow time of the year financially. The Post is not as busy during this time because of vacations and many outdoor events. So, if you can, please come by and show your support.

We will have three events to finish off the summer of 2013.All are listed in the “Upcoming Events” section on our website.

Hope to see you soon and often. Thanks for all your support.

As most of you know, the renovations in the members' lounge are moving at a snail's pace. Due to a couple of setbacks, we are plugging along with the ceiling and walls. Our goal is to paint the ceiling and walls, add two more televisions for football season and replace the rug. Hopefully, this will be done by the September 14th clambake.

Reminder to some – if you are not invited, you are not welcome!

COMMANDER'S CORNER
Thanks to all of you - members, sons and friends - we have made it through another year.
Last year ended up being a good year for the Post. We accomplished a lot of the objectives that we had set out to do. The grounds and the function room improvements were well overdue. Thanks again for all your help and support and may the year 2013 be a better one for everyone.
Our focus for this upcoming year is going to be on the members lounge. It is time we get to enjoy some of the new props on our side. We are hoping to start some renovations by the end of February which include painting, replacing some wood panels, new carpet, windows and, hopefully, replacing some of the furniture. This year we hope to add more TV's and maybe a new pool table. Again, this is a work in progress. It all depends on how much support we get. Anything you can do or any help you can give will be gratefully appreciated. Remember – keep supporting the “Best Post on the East Coast.”
Semper Fi,
Commander Jim Doherty

Wishing you both the best from the Post.
Semper Fi,
OOH-RAH!

SICK CALL
Please say a prayer for a speedy recovery to Michael Kowilick, a/k/a “Old Paint.” Your friends at the Post hope you feel better soon.

CONDOLENCES
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Dorothy Dow and member, Pat Walsh, both passed away last month. Pat and Dorothy were both long-time residents of Squantum. They were both great and respected people who will be missed by all.

For those who didn't know Dorothy, she is the mother of our Thursday night bartender, Cindy Flynn Dow, and also the mother-in-law of our Friday afternoon bartender, Lori. Again, our prayers go out to both families.

REMINDER
Our Post is one of the most active and one of the nicest posts around, so please let's keep it that way! Respect others and treat people the way you would like to be treated. Remember, just because it is your opinion doesn't mean everyone else sees it your way. Please control the swearing – inappropriate language is not accepted.

PLEASE NOTE
There have been many complaints of the smoking in front of the main entrance. Effective immediately, there is no more smoking out front. It is only fair that both members and function hall renters should not have to walk through people smoking to get inside. Please throw your cigarette butts in the proper receptacles and not on the ground.

NO SMOKING IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING – THIS MEANS EVERYONE.

POST DUMPSTER
The Post dumpster is to be used for Post trash only! Anyone who is seen or caught on camera throwing their own trash in the dumpster will be fined $99.00 (this is the cost to empty it,) or else lose their membership for one year.

Our website will be up and running by the time the next newsletter is printed so, if you don't mind reading the newsletter online, please call the Post at 617-328-9824 and let us know.

COMMANDER'S CORNER

To the membership – I first want to thank you for this opportunity to be your commander for another year. It is an honor and a privilege to be the Commander of our great Post!

As most of you know, in June we had our Post Installation. The word is that it was one of the best installations we ever had. At this year's installation we had a special guest speaker and singer – Dan Clark (The Singing Trooper.) He was unbelievable!

Also present were eight Marines who served in Iraq and wanted to come by to thank the Post for all the care packages our Troop Fund sent to them. They all were dressed in their blues and looked very sharp! Thanks to all who helped and participated in this year's installation.

Semper Fi, Commander James Doherty

COLOR GUARD

Thanks to our Color Guard – we had a well-attended flag raising ceremony and a great presence in this year's Fourth of July parade.

To the Color Guard - we will be placing an order for uniforms and caps for you during the first week in September, so if you are need of something, please let us know.

April 2012 Newsletter

COMMANDER'S CORNER  As your commander, I first want to thank all of you for paying your 2012 dues. This is the fifth straight year that both the regular members and Sons of the Legion made their quota at 100% paid dues. This is a huge goal in such a bad economy. It is also a privilege to inform you that our Post was mentioned in the March issue of The American Legion magazine. While in Afghanistan, member Kenneth Wood mentioned in his interview with the magazine that before he left he had a going-away party at the Robert I. Nickerson Post 382 and that we sent him care packages. This is to the best of our knowledge the first time that the Nickerson Post has been recognized in the magazine that is sent out nationwide. Be proud of your membership with such a great organization. It is a privilege. Semper Fi, Commander James Doherty ST. PATRICK'S DAY

Thanks to everyone who helped in any way or just participated in the St. Patrick's Day celebration. We had such a great time and the day itself was a huge success. Special thanks to members Michael Norris, Mark Hastings and Ronnie Burns for doing all the preparation and cooking. The corned beef dinner was definitely one of the best ever! Another thank you goes out to member, Bill Harris, who provided all the music. Not only did he D.J. for over 9 hours, he also helped serve the dinner. Thanks, Bill!

CONDOLENCES

Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the family of Joe Graham who passed away last month. He was a long-time resident of Squantum and a relative of a lot of members of this Post. He will be missed.

PRAYERS

Our prayers go out to Sammy Erickson who underwent surgery last month at Children's Hospital. We wish you a speedy recovery. Sammy is one of our Son members who helps out around the Post on Wednesday afternoons. He's the bartender's helper, looking to take over Jim Ritchie's duties. REMINDER

Remember, this is a non-profit organization for veterans and their families. Please treat the Post like it is your own because it is. It's one of the best posts around, so police up your butts or any other trash. Respect all other members and treat people the way you'd like to be treated. On the jukebox situation - because it is loud at times, please do not play it during any home town sporting events. There is plenty of time for music after the games. Now for all those who don't care for the jukebox - it has been around for a long time and does bring in enough money to pay the phone bill. So the jukebox is here to stay. If this is a problem, please take it up with the manager, not the bartenders. Just a reminder that the only person allowed behind the bar is the bartender on duty. Thanks for your cooperation.
